I'm going to try and road register the YZ here in SA. Anybody gone through a similar process and any ideas about costs involved?

I have not looked into it for SA, but it is difficult for Vic and NSW.

Good news! made some enquiries with dept of transport and it seems my bike was road registered in a past life! Don't even have to have it inspected or anything just a bit of paper work. Sweet as.

Can you please explain how it all worked out and how the previous owner did it, if you know.

When I got it off my mate he was certain it was a 91 YZ, I thought it might have been a WR because it had all the switch gear on it and a headlight but apparently not. Its ended up being a 90 model because I looked at the compliance plate which has been added post production, but unfortunately I don't know how the bloke went about it, sorry sibbo, I'll try find out but.
Now for wheels, brakes, hook up electrics and I'm sorted. I've just got my L plates and it under and it says any bike under 250cc or under excluding RS250, TZ etc so I reckon I should be sweet to get into it.

Here 'tis. Keep in mind nobody has touch it in three years so needs a good going over which wil happen over the next few weeks hopefully.

I suppose thats the legacy of having to register everything with wheels and a motor in S.A.
We were in Berri for a while around 99/00 and noticed everything there was registered.
They had plates just like everything else but some were concessional/harvest vehicles.
I did see some MX bikes hoonin' around with plates and lights on but no indicators.

Apparently the bloke who registered it lived in the riverland. Its all starting to make sense
