Ok, so I'm thinking this dirty stuff looks like a bit of fun ... I haven't ridden on the dirt since I was a kid, and then it was mainly just paddock bashing apart from a couple of forays onto an MX track on a yz80 which I remember involving a lot of bouncing. But I digress....

Anyhoo, the DRZ is my daily ride and while I'm happy to hack around the bush on it, I'm wondering if a dedicated dirt bike would be a good idea. I'd like to make the DRZ a bit more SM specific, more guts with the cams and mebbe a big bore, and perhaps some suspension revalving and lowering, which wouldn't help as a dirt ride. And add to this I really wouldn't like to smash up my pride and joy and then try and work out how to get to work :?

So given my lack of any dirt riding skill, what would make a good noob offroadie that won't break the bank? I'm wondering if something like a bone stock WR250F would be a good thing, or whether I'd even need anything as good as that ... I'd mainly like something with noob friendly power and which is light and easily thrown around. I'd really like a 97 CR250 for a later road going motard practice but I'm thinking that would be a really, really bad bike to start learning dirt riding on

Neil, I too am looking for another dirt bike as I am sick of washing my mootard. I figured a pitbike would give me enough of a dirt fix to have had fun at the end of the day... I just happen to know a bloke who has some shit hot little pit bikes for sale :D (of course at 'mates rates') At the moment I take Datto_Masters CR125 bush when I get that dirt urge, but I have to ride the bike very hard to keep with mates on the big 4 strokes.

When I looking into Motocross, I spoke to a lot of people and they all said if you want to learn to ride well start on a 125. You can't be lazy on a 125 and once you can ride one you can ride anything. As much as i wanted to have a 250 I went with what everyone told me and I don't regret it at all. The bonus is the cheap maintenance and you can just about do it all yourself. I guess you'd know that(KR1). You could get a WR, great bike but in comparison you can be lazy. I used to ride my friends WR (DRZ this week) it was good but too easy. For the record (You can ask him if you like) He said my bike is more fun, infact every time he got on it I couldn't get him off (the bastard  )
So ther you go my 5 cents worth!
Your more than welcome to take mine for a burn anytime.

How much are we talking about for one of these in Oz?

I'm in the proccess of fitting my retard up to go riding in the desert next weekend, should be a real laugh for everyone else to watch me fall off.
I'm open to the idea of getting a smaller bike to ride in the bush as there is no way I'd take the 640 into the bumpy stuff.

dicky.

Are you crazy Neil, I saw a neat motard in your shed that needed some bars and a bit of creative licence when it came to the body work, but all the same, Supermono and Supermoto only change one letter. :) That would free up your DRZ a bit more for the bush. For God sake mate, ride something with friggin valves, rather than a koala killin' oil spill.

I had an OverRacing engined XT 600 in 1995 that would like to take it to the 2 strokes. It was a 685cc jigger with a pair of meaty rock chucker tyres. It would put that much roost onto your 2 stroke it wouldnt get up on the pipe for the weight!

A few months back my young bro finally bought himself a dirtbike.
A TM125.

When i say finally i have to explain that he has been into motocross all his life and always wanted one. When he got her we couldn't wait to try it out.

After 5mins i was hooked, even circling a field gave that sence of freedom i used to get riding on the roads. 10 years ago. Theres NO rules, you dont have to look out for cops, camera's or oncoming traffic. You go as fast as you can. (I would use this reason alone why to give it ago again.)

Theres a price to pay though. Fitness.... jez, you have to be real fit. Thats why i bought the Berg, off road riding is so challanging, im even off the booze and cigs now so i can get fitter and enjoy my off road/motocross riding.
On the track is mad. Trying to stay in the ruts while guys are jumping over you is an experience. If you get to pass someone its a real buzz.

hers my 1.5 cents, cos .5 of a cent is usually complete gibberish!!

i had not done much dirt riding and had the SV650 for 3 years, sold it and bought an 04 YZ250 (2 stroke). God dam it went harder than all the mx bikes i had ever ridden!.

It took a while to get used to it, i flipped it while i was running it in! Now i can ride in control, most of the time, so about 3-4 months. But i am oftin out of control on my KL250 1980 model, so if i was less f'd' in the head, im sure i could be in control of the yz all the time.

the power band is not a problem, the delivery is...fast, but controlable. you can always add flywheel weights, which im told calm down the power heaps.

it depends what sort of riding you want to do, trail riding, get a trail bike (xr drz), enduro (wr, yz-wr) , at the mx track get a mx bike (yzf, yz, crf cr rm kx etc) and a two stroke mx bike will be perfect.

Also factor in rebuilds between 2 and 4 stroke, how many moving parts do each engine have? modern 4 stroke need just as much work as a 2 stroke, as they are so hot.

Well if your want to ride my bike, let me know.

basically if you abuse it if bites you, treat it nice and it hammers!

We might need a VSMR day at the mx track to ride everyone elses bikes?

If you want to tame it down a bit get a wolf ignition. they will give you 2 settings one is smooth and easier to ride while the other is a no bullshit type of power. They are awsome!!

I rode a YZ450 at the Motocross school and it go pretty hard it's very different power you really need to get them side by side to compare.
I'd prefer a 2 stroke every time myself, however the diesel I ride on the road is allright.
Track day sounds like a plan what do ya reacon broadmeadows moto park??

Hey Lee have you ridden a new 250 motocrosser on dirt? Then add slick clay, then you need to smooth it out a little, particulary if you a dirt noob!

 Dont bag the strokers- theres nuthin like the tinny sound in the Aussie bush. The mosy reliable bike Ive ever owned was a 97 yz250, none of this change the oil, adjust the valve clearances crap either :P

If you blokes were still looking for a small bore whipper snipper, a mate has his RM125 for sale and I think it would be a decent bike as a comparison to the WR/CR Huskys you were contemplating.
